A printed quilt is easy to look after. A few habits keep the colors bright and the quilting flat for years.
Before the first use
Shake the quilt out and let it air for a few hours. A quick cold wash is optional but makes it softer.
Washing
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, on its own or with similar colors.
- Use a mild liquid detergent. Skip bleach and optical brighteners, which fade printed colors.
- Wash the two pillow shams with the quilt so all three pieces age the same way.
- If your washer is small, use a laundromat front-loader for a king size: the quilt needs room to move.
Drying
- Tumble dry low, with two clean tennis balls or dryer balls to keep the fill even.
- Take it out while very slightly damp and lay it flat to finish; this keeps the stitching from puckering.
- No ironing on the printed face. If needed, iron the back on low.
Between seasons
Store it clean and fully dry in a breathable cotton bag, not plastic. Fold it loosely and change the fold lines now and then.
Spot cleaning
Dab spills with cold water and a drop of detergent, then rinse. Rubbing hard can lift the print.
