Printed vs. appliquéd quilts: what you are actually buying

Printed vs. appliquéd quilts: what you are actually buying

Many quilted bedding sets sold online, including ours, show photos where the design looks sewn on: raised patchwork, stitched appliqué shapes, embroidered edges. It is worth knowing exactly what arrives at your door.

What "printed" means

On a Lunara set the whole design is printed onto a brushed microfiber face. The patchwork squares, the appliqué look and the shading you see in the photos are part of that printed artwork. Nothing is cut out and sewn on, and nothing is embroidered.

What "quilted" means

After printing, the face fabric, a light polyester fill and a backing are stitched together. That quilting stitch is real and gives the quilt texture, loft and warmth. It follows our standard quilting pattern across the whole piece, so it does not trace the outline of each flower or animal in the print.

Why we print instead of sew

  • Price. A hand-appliquéd quilt with this much detail would cost several times more.
  • Range. Printing lets us offer thousands of designs, each made to order.
  • Care. There are no sewn-on pieces to fray or lift in the wash.

How to read any quilt listing

Look for the words printed, digital print or 3D print in the description. If a listing shows detailed appliqué at a low price and never says how it is made, it is almost certainly printed. We say it up front on every product page so there are no surprises.

Still not sure?

Email support@lunarabedding.com and ask about any design before you order. If a set arrives misprinted or not as described, we reprint or refund it — see our refund policy.
